ESSENTIAL DESERT OBJECTS

A judge was punishing three men because they had committed a crime. Their sentence was a few years in the desert. He said that they could each take one thing with them.

The first guy decides to take an umbrella, so that he can have shade whenever he wants.

The second guy decides to take a water bottle so that he won't get thirsty.

Finally, the third guy decides to take a car door.

The judge asked, "Why in the world would you want to take a car door?" The man replies, "Just in case it gets hot, I can roll down the window." - roll down the window, abrir a janela (do carro)

One of the world's biggest electronic companies, Sony, is on course for its first annual loss in 14 years. The company blames the global economic downturn and the strength of the yen for a lesser demand for its products. Mariko Oi reports from Singapore:
The Japanese electronic giant Sony has slashed its annual earnings forecast again. It's
expected to report an annual operating loss of almost 3 billion dollars. The company had previously forecast a profit of 2 billion dollars.
If confirmed, this would be Sony's first loss in 14 years, the second only since the company was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1958.
Like other Japanese exporters, Sony is taking a beating from the global slump. The yen's appreciation also means less profit - as the company gets 80 percent of its sales from overseas.

Obama first day
Words in the news © British Broadcasting Corporation 200

President Obama is making his first efforts to act on his election promises. Today he meets his economic team; he is also promising to get together with his military advisers soon to make a plan to pull troops out of Iraq. Justin Webb reports:
Last July, then candidate Obama made a promise about Iraq. 'On my first day in office', he said, 'I will bring the Joint Chiefs of Staff in and I will give them a new mission, and that is to end the war responsibly and deliberately, but decisively'.
Since then something else hashappened of course - the world economy has collapsed, and politically it's now more important for him to be seen to be acting on the economy than on Iraq.
Nonetheless, both subjects will figure in his discussions today. This administration is promising action across the board, so a number of executive orders are likely to come soon.
Already last night the White House - in a memo signed by the new Chief of Staff ordered all the last-minute regulations signed by President Bush to be put on hold.
But it is the economy that will dominate the early days of this administration - and on which Mr Obama knows he will be judged.

Como se diz OUVIR em Inglês 'HEAR' 'LISTEN'

Hi guys!

Listen! There is somebody downstairs. [Escute! Tem alguém lá embaixo].
Listen to me… I’m talking to you! [Escute-me... estou falando com você.]

Do you like listening to music while you drive? [Você gosta de ouvir música enquanto dirige?]
Listen to the interview and answer the questions on page 9. [Escute/Ouça a entrevista e responda as perguntas da página 9.]

Seguem algumas frases bastante comuns com listen:
Listen, I’ve something to tell you. [Escute, tenho algo a te dizer.]
* chamar a atenção da pessoa
I’ve tried but my daughter won’t listen (to me).

I heard the bell at noon. [Ouvi o sino ao meio-dia.]
The workers heard a noise outside the factory.
Michael heard the teacher talking to the headmaster. [O Michael ouviu o professor conversando com o diretor.]
Phoebe heard the baby cry / Phoebe heard the baby crying. [A Phoebe ouviu o bebê chorar / A Phoebe ouviu o bebê chorando.]

Seguem algumas frases bastante comuns com hear:
Speak up please sir. I can’t hear you. [Fale mais alto por favor, senhor. Não estou te ouvindo...]
* ao telefone
Have you heard the news? [Você já soube da(s) notícia(s)]?
* contar uma novidade
I hear / I heard (that) Mr. Black is ill.
* comentar, confirmar informações

IMPROVE YOUR VOCABULARY
LISTEN
‘Pânico’ listeners enjoy making fun of Sabrina.
My friend Joshua is a good listener.
[Meu amigo Joshua é um bom ouvinte / Meu amigo Joshua sabe ouvir].

HEAR
The minister realized that his sermon had not touched his hearers.
Scientists say noise pollution causes loss of hearing.

DO NOT FORGET:
I didn’t hear the phone because I was listening to the radio.

Expressão: ZERO A ESQUERDA

Expressão: Zero a Esquerda

Exemplos:

* That guy's a real good-for-nothing. (Aquele sujeito é um tremendo zero a esquerda)
* You are a real good-for-nothing! (Você é o maior zero a esquerda)

That's all, folks! Have a great week!!!
