PAGANDO UM MICO......FALSO COGNATO.....’’RESUME’’

Relato de alguém que ‘pagou o mico’...Eu estava fazendo um curso de piloto privado em Boston no ano de 1995 e um dia fui fazer um vôo para Albany, no estado de Nova York. Tudo foi muito bem na ida, desci no aeroporto etc. e decolei com destino a Lawrence, no estado de Massachusetts. Depois de meia hora de vôo, muito feliz da vida, conversando sempre com os controladores pelo rádio, recebo chamado para mudar minha direção (me passaram as coordenadas) por causa de um show de pára-quedismo que estava acontecendo naquela região.

Vinte minutos depois, me chamaram pelo rádio novamente e falaram: “Piper N3YZ, you can resume your course now.” Eu simplesmente disse: “Piper N3YZ, over.” (Piper N3YZ, câmbio.) e continuei na mesma direção pensando: “Quando será que vou poder voltar para meu curso normal?”. Uma meia hora depois, o mesmo controlador me chamou e disse: “N3YZ, I thought you were heading to Lawrence.” (Pensei que você estivesse indo para Lawrence). Eu disse: “Yes, I am!” (Sim, estou!).

Só quando ele me deu as coordenadas para Lawrence, fui entender que “RESUME” significa ‘restart’ e ‘start again’, “retomar”, “reassumir” etc. Pelo menos estava sozinho, voando a 5.000 pés, tinha combustível suficiente e o controlador não entendeu o meu mico.

Bem, o piloto entendeu que ‘resume’ seria ‘resumir’ a sua posição...hehehehe. By the way, ‘resumir’ é o verbo ‘to summarise’.

Quem é que nunca deu uma 'bola fora' ao falar inglês? Os relatos de situações constrangedoras vividas por quem ainda não possui domínio da língua inglesa têm o objetivo de divertir, ensinar e evitar que mais gente caia nas mesmas armadilhas. Cuidado com os ‘falsos amigos’, isto é, os ‘falsos cognatos’, palavras em inglês que são parecidas com outras palavras em português, mas na verdade tem sentido diferente, merecendo o nome de ‘falsos cognatos’ ou o apelido de ‘false friends’.

Com o tempo, vou postando alguns ‘falsos cognatos’ mais comuns para que aos poucos vocês assimilem as diferenças.
